The Anambra State Primary Health Care Development Agency (ASPHCDA) has announced that the second round of its catch-up immunisation campaign will commence on February 14.

The initiative aims to reach children who missed previous vaccinations or are completely unvaccinated.

Speaking at a stakeholders' meeting in Awka on Monday, the agency’s Director of Disease Control and Immunisation, Nnamdi Uliagbafusi, emphasized the importance of the campaign in closing immunisation gaps.

According to him, the campaign—dubbed the “Big Catch-up” immunisation drive—will focus on nine local government areas (LGAs) with the highest numbers of zero-dose and unvaccinated children. These LGAs include Ayamelum, Anaocha, Idemili North, Idemili South, Orumba North, Orumba South, Nnewi South, Ihiala, and Aguata.

The campaign will run from February 14 to 21, with vaccinations available at designated health centres, community hubs, and outreach locations.

Mr. Uliagbafusi highlighted the crucial role of routine immunisation in reducing child morbidity and mortality.

“This initiative targets children from birth to 59 months, ensuring that no child is left behind,” he stated.

He also called for collaboration from key stakeholders, noting that addressing immunisation gaps requires the active involvement of religious and traditional leaders, community representatives, civil society organisations, and the media.

UNICEF consultant Uju Eze praised the Anambra State government for prioritising the health of its residents, particularly women and children. She reassured the public of UNICEF’s continued partnership in strengthening healthcare delivery.

Additionally, the State Health Educator, Uju Onwuegbuzina, urged stakeholders to intensify awareness efforts, ensuring that more families take advantage of the immunisation opportunity.
