The Republic of Niger has implemented new immigration policies affecting Nigerian travelers. As of February 18, 2025, Nigerien authorities no longer recognize the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Travel Certificate or ECOWAS passport for entry into their country. This change requires Nigerians to present a valid international passport to gain entry.
This policy shift follows Niger's recent withdrawal from ECOWAS, alongside Mali and Burkina Faso. The three nations have formed the Alliance of Sahel States (AES) and are introducing new biometric passports under this alliance. Burkina Faso began issuing passports without the ECOWAS logo earlier this month.
An immigration officer at the Jibia/Magama border in Katsina State confirmed the enforcement of this new policy, stating that Nigerien authorities have ceased recognizing ECOWAS travel documents from Nigerian travelers.
Travelers intending to enter Niger are advised to obtain a valid international passport to comply with the new entry requirements.
