Pope Francis, the 266th leader of the Roman Catholic Church and the first Latin American and Jesuit pope, has died at the age of 88. He passed away on Easter Monday, April 21, 2025, at 7:35 a.m. local time in his residence at the Vatican’s Casa Santa Marta. The announcement was made by Cardinal Kevin Farrell, the Vatican's camerlengo, who praised the Pope's life of service and commitment to Gospel values, particularly his dedication to the poor and marginalized.

Born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Pope Francis was elected to the papacy on March 13, 2013, following the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI. His tenure was marked by efforts to reform the Church, address institutional issues, and advocate for social justice. He was known for his progressive views, including support for migrants, concern about climate change, and calls for the abolition of the death penalty.

Pope Francis had faced various health challenges over the years, including a recent bout of double pneumonia that required a 38-day hospitalization. Despite these issues, he continued to fulfill his papal duties until his passing.

Following his death, preparations are underway for the papal conclave, where eligible cardinals will convene to elect his successor. The conclave is expected to take place in the Sistine Chapel, adhering to the traditional procedures established for such transitions.
