The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested former Akwa Ibom State Governor, Udom Emmanuel, over allegations of financial misappropriation amounting to N700 billion. The arrest, which took place on Tuesday, is part of an ongoing investigation into the alleged diversion of state funds during his tenure as governor.
Sources within the anti-graft agency confirmed that Emmanuel was taken into custody at the EFCC headquarters in Abuja, where he is being interrogated regarding the alleged fraudulent transactions that occurred under his administration from 2015 to 2023. The former governor, who was succeeded by Umo Eno, has been under investigation for alleged mismanagement of public funds, inflated contracts, and other financial irregularities.
The EFCC had previously invited Emmanuel for questioning, but his reported reluctance to honor the invitation is believed to have prompted his arrest. Investigators are said to be scrutinizing several high-value contracts awarded during his administration, including infrastructural projects and government investments suspected to have been used as conduits for embezzlement.
A senior EFCC official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, stated that Emmanuel's arrest is a significant step in holding public officeholders accountable. "The commission has been gathering evidence for months, and the arrest is part of our broader effort to recover stolen funds and ensure justice," the source said.
Meanwhile, supporters of the former governor have condemned the arrest, calling it a politically motivated move aimed at tarnishing his reputation. Some political analysts argue that Emmanuel’s arrest could have implications for the political landscape in Akwa Ibom, especially given his influence in the state’s power structure.
As of the time of this report, the EFCC has not officially released a statement regarding the arrest. However, sources indicate that the former governor may face multiple charges, including money laundering, abuse of office, and financial misconduct.
Emmanuel, a former banker before joining politics, has yet to issue a response to the allegations. The case is expected to unfold in the coming weeks, with Nigerians keenly watching how the investigation progresses.
