The Federal High Court has given the green light for the recall process of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, who represents Kogi Central Senatorial District. This development follows a petition reportedly signed by a significant number of her constituents, seeking her removal from office.
The recall process, as outlined by the Nigerian Constitution, requires that at least 50% of registered voters in the senatorial district sign a petition, after which the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) must verify the signatures before conducting a referendum. If the majority of voters support the recall, the senator will lose her seat.
Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has been a vocal advocate for her constituents, often clashing with political opponents. While her supporters argue that the recall attempt is politically motivated, those behind the petition claim she has not adequately represented the interests of Kogi Central.
With the court's approval, INEC is expected to commence the verification process, which will determine the next steps in the recall proceedings.
