In a tragic incident on Monday, February 24, 2025, two farmers, Batemue Philip Ebo and Christopher Bello, were ambushed and killed by suspected herdsmen in Okpekpe, Etsako East Local Government Area of Edo State. The victims were reportedly attacked on their way to their farms in the early hours of the morning.

The Edo State Police Command's Public Relations Officer, CSP Moses Yamu, confirmed the incident, stating that the command received a report from the Chief of Okpekpe at approximately 9:00 AM. Upon arrival, the Divisional Police Officer and mobile police officers found the lifeless bodies of the two farmers. In response to the attack, security measures in the area have been reassessed to pursue the perpetrators and prevent future occurrences.

This attack comes just days after a similar incident in Ovia South-West Local Government Area, where about 23 farmers were reportedly killed in assaults on seven farming communities. These consecutive attacks have raised significant concerns about the escalating insecurity in Edo State's rural regions.

The Edo State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has condemned the recent violence, expressing deep sorrow over the loss of innocent lives. The party has called on Governor Monday Okpebholo to take immediate and decisive actions to address the security challenges and prevent further deterioration of the situation.

As investigations continue, the community remains on high alert, with local authorities and security agencies working collaboratively to restore peace and protect residents from further attacks.
