Tensions flared in Uromi, Edo State, after a mob killed several travelers from Northern Nigeria, mistakenly accusing them of being kidnappers. The victims, mostly Hausa hunters, were traveling from Port Harcourt to Kano for the Sallah celebrations when they were stopped by local vigilantes.
Upon searching their vehicle, vigilantes discovered hunting firearms, which led to suspicions. Without verification, a mob gathered and attacked the travelers, resulting in the deaths of at least seven individuals.
Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo has condemned the killings and ordered a full investigation. He assured that those responsible for the mob action would face justice.
The Arewa Youth Consultative Forum also strongly denounced the incident, calling it a reckless act of violence.
This tragedy has reignited concerns about mob justice in Nigeria. Authorities are urging citizens to allow law enforcement agencies to handle security concerns instead of resorting to violence.
