The Nigeria Police Force has detained the President of the Niger Delta Congress (NDC) in connection with the group's planned protest against President Bola Tinubu's recent declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State. The NDC leader was arrested on Tuesday, March 25, 2025, in Port Harcourt and is currently being held at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Rivers State.

The arrest follows the NDC's vocal opposition to the emergency measures, which include the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara and other elected officials for six months. President Tinubu stated that these actions aim to address political instability and pipeline vandalism in the oil-rich region.

In response to the emergency declaration, labor unions have expressed concerns about its impact on the state's residents, particularly regarding the non-payment of salaries to local government employees.

Niger Delta leaders have urged President Tinubu to adopt a neutral stance in resolving the crisis, emphasizing the importance of fairness in addressing the region's issues.

As of now, the Nigeria Police Force has not issued an official statement regarding the NDC President's detention.
