Social Media Influencer 'Flag Boy' Arrested During Abuja Protest Against Cybercrime Act

On April 7, 2025, Nigerian police arrested social media influencer 'Flag Boy' and three other individuals during a protest in Abuja against the Cybercrime Act of 2024. The demonstration, organized by the 'Take It Back' (TIB) movement, aimed to call for the repeal of the Act, which critics argue suppresses free speech.

The protesters initially attempted to convene at Eagle Square and the Federal Secretariat but were obstructed by armed police officers. Subsequently, they regrouped near the Transcorp Hilton in Maitama, where law enforcement deployed teargas to disperse the crowd. During this confrontation, 'Flag Boy' was reportedly singled out, assaulted, and taken into custody along with two other demonstrators. Additionally, reports indicate that four members of the TIB movement were arrested in Yobe State during similar protests.

The Cybercrime Act of 2024 has been a subject of contention, with activists asserting that its provisions infringe upon citizens' rights to free expression. The recent arrests have intensified debates surrounding the balance between cybersecurity measures and civil liberties in Nigeria.
